2015 Excellence in Improving Learning and Development and Overall Award for Excellence winner
Vanessa Adzaip is an Auslan teacher for Deaf Children Australia and Deaf NT, improving learning and development skills of children who are Deaf and their parents, as well as teaching adults, professionals and individuals.
In particular, Vanessa worked on a program called ‘VidKids’ – providing services to children with hearing or vision loss living in remote and outer regional areas of the Northern Territory using video conferencing. Vanessa’s work on the VidKids project to 19 Indigenous families is acknowledged as outstanding and she continues to achieve great improvements in the lives of the children and families she works with. Her nominators all mentioned connections – to people, to services, to the Deaf community and for children, to play and joy.
Vanessa empowers all of those she teaches, deaf and non-deaf alike, investing parents of deaf children and the children themselves with the skills to enjoy a more inclusive life by providing important communication and life skills. The VidKids program offered well-needed services to remote families and Vanessa’s role in improving learning and development through her professionalism and dedication is appreciated by all who work alongside her, including from her colleagues at Deaf NT and Deaf Children Australia, and those at Northern Territory Department of Education, the Royal Institute of Deaf and Blind Children and Australian Hearing.
