About Total Recreation
2015 Excellence in Improving Participation
Total Recreation was established in Darwin in 1991, acknowledging the desire for people with disability to have the same opportunities as other members of society to participate in sport and recreation activities. Total Recreation has developed into an organisation that runs a wide array of activities, working with other community organisations and sporting bodies to develop options that people with disabilities can participate in.
Total Recreation’s motto is ‘Everyone’s Included’ and their activities are for school aged children, youth, and adults and include school sports, youth camps, excursions to special events, sailing, dance, fitness, tenpin bowling, arts and crafts, as well as holidays both within Australia and overseas. Each year they coordinate the Dancing with Celebrities Gala Ball, an annual fundraiser and community event
Total Recreation has the vision of connecting people to community and purpose of delivering programs that increase opportunities and empower connection with the wider community, through dedicated staff, quality services and ensuring that their members are respected and empowered to engage in community life and activities.
A quote from the nomination –
“Total Rec have provided support to my family for the past 24 years and have let my son shine into the wonderful social person he is today. I, like many parents, are truly thankful for the wonderful work that this organisation has done."
