About Henbury School
2015 Excellence in Innovation winner
Henbury School is the winner of this award for its innovative approach in developing and running four innovative business enterprise programs that make a significant difference in the lives of people with disability preparing and transitioning to work. Their programs has seen increasing numbers of students in 2014/15 working towards Certificate level accreditation and accessing on-site and off-site training.
The four business enterprises, Opportunity Knocks – an opportunity shop, Coffee Club, Gardening Crew and Sense-ational Designs, are innovative programs through which students can apply their skills towards Certificates in Business, Retail, Horticulture, Hospitality and Trade as well as supported employment opportunities at HPA, Ausdesigns and Kokoda Industries.
Through continued attention to creating fresh and innovative transition services, flexible enough to meet a wide range of student needs, Henbury School can arm their students with information and opportunities on which they can build their futures.
One example – in 2012 a student did work training at Opportunity Knocks, was employed there and studied her Certificate I and II in Retail. She then got a traineeship at City Beach surf shop.
