2015 Excellence in Promoting Community Awareness
Led by Kathy Burns, Artistic Director at Barkly Regional Arts, the 2015 Desert Harmony Festival in the Barkly region warmly and enthusiastically embraced the theme ‘Let DIS be Light’ after receiving funding from the National Disability Insurance Agency. The Festival theme strongly highlighted the valuable contribution of community members, and all Australians living with a disability to the cultural and art focussed event based around Tennant Creek.
The event focussed on the inclusion of people living with disability in participating in and attending the Festival events.
A local artist living with disability was engaged to design the images used for marketing purposes, people were supported to take up volunteer roles, the program was filled with opportunities to witness people with the lived experience of disability performing; sharing their skill, art, and stories.
Prominent Australian, elite athlete and champion Kurt Fearnley gave the keynote speech at the opening night event.
The Festival achieved its aim of raising awareness of ‘disability’ with community members and ignited conversation amongst people and community about the ways in which people with disability can contribute, and participate in community events.
