In the 2014 Disability Services Awards, Ahmed Ibrahim, Remote Disability Worker from NPY Women’s Council, was recognised for excelling in promoting community awareness by telling one person’s story to convey the importance of living on country and accessing disability services. Ahmed created a film called ‘Lisa’s Story’, about a person with disability living in the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara Lands (APY) Lands, at the intersection of Northern Territory, South Australia and Western Australia.
Ahmed used the film to promote awareness of the importance of connection to country for some Aboriginal Australians and the necessity for people with disabilities’ wishes to be respected in the planning and delivery of services. The film conveys a clear picture of life in a remote area, the challenges and the benefits. It is a wonderful film, and we hope you will watch it, and share it with others.
